The church also had major encyclicals 1891- helped develop "catholic" political parties, 1966 outlawing birth control,)

1st day of class--Quiz on Chapter 11 quiz on Geography, Outside Book Analysis REPORT ALSO DUE

geography-- SUMMER ASSIGNMENT FILE

outside reading--SUMMER ASSIGNMENT FILE

2nd 6 questions- September 9th

10 IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE WE START

1. This is an AP level class- therefore it will be challenging and study intensive. Most of the work will be on your own. Classes are to better understand the material through discussion and analysis. If this course is primarily to gain AP credit, it's going to be a very long year, there are lots of C's and worse in this course--of course as an honors level course it gets a .5 GPA boost.

2. AP European History is Open Enrollment--therefore if you haven't taken AP US, talk to someone who has taken either AP US or AP European History so you what are the level of expectations and the workload. The workload is comparable to AP US, though I can't promise I'm as much fun as Mr. Clarke or Mr. Keeler.

3. Students are expected to read ahead of the course lecture--This is college

4. We start around the year 1300 and finish w/current events in Europe. There are loads of books, movies on 100s of events we will study this year, sadly we will often only be able to touch the surface but that's why there are upper level classes in college.

5. Homework is required and must be typed. In general its about 3 to 5 pages of homework every 2 weeks

6. Tests are multiple choice and free response (generally 70% of the test grade is based on multiple choice, 30% on the free response).

7. You will also practice and learn DBQs, AP Euro has its own unique rubric for the AP Exam.

8. Once the course starts in August it is quite likely that you will not be allowed to drop the course, so make sure this is what you want and most importantly, are interested in.

9. Though I gather that some people in this universe aren't fascinated by modern European History, I don't know how. European history includes literature from the poetry of Petrarch and his unrequited love for Laura to Cervantes' knight in shining armor, Don Quixote, Goethe's deal with the devil in Faust, and a 100 others. Philosophers such as Descartes, Hobbes, and Nietszche, social scientists, from Machiavelli to Keynes, leaders; including lascivious Popes and ruthless despots; religious reformers, Luther to Wesley to Pope John XXIII and of course artists; from Giotto to Pollock. We'll soar with DaVinci's flight fantasy and plummet to the abyss with The Third Reich's final solution.

10. I love teaching this course.
